Chevas A. F. Balloun

Founder and editor of Gospel Vision, Co-founder of Consol.io and Artifact.tools, Christian, husband, and father of three. His professional career is in design and creative endeavors and his builder-mentality drives entrepreneurship for the purpose of adding blessing to the world. Having blogged since 2006, he is a practiced writer and thinker. He has a bachelors in Comparative Religion from the University of Washington and his high conscientiousness makes him a seeker of truth and a self-motivated learner.

Tom Thiessen View Website

Tom is married to Nikki and has 4 energetic kids. He studied philosophy at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO and Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. He studied theology at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. He planted Gospel Church Durango in 2011 where he currently serves as a pastor and trains church planters. Tom is an editor at Gospel.Vision and has personal interests and things that make him relatable, etc.

Damon Robertson

Damon is a former Marine and currently works in a major metropolitan fire department. He and his wife and their three children reside in California.

Jonathan Helvoigt View Website

Jonathan Helvoigt, writer of short-story blog 'Fat Bird', was the head-chef at a sushi restaurant for three days with no prior experience. Years prior, he started a riot in Chihuahua Mexico, which alerted the Mexican military. During his studies at Fort Lewis College as an English major, he hosted a radio show, wrote a sit-com pilot under the tutelage of an accomplished writer for CBS and Netflix, and started 'Fat Bird Carpentry' which now has hand-crafted drums in shops across the country. He and his wife, Ryan, currently reside in Louisville, KY, and plan to return soon to the more mountainous, less bourbonous land of Durango, CO after graduating with an MDiv from Southern Seminary. There they will apprentice with Gospel Church Durango, and write about strange things.

Matt Hert

Matt Hert owns four whole vinyl records, and three 35mm cameras. He pretends to enjoy backpacking but it is just an excuse to sit in the forest, drink whiskey, and tend to a fire. In his spare time, Matt makes furniture and sings poorly to his beautiful wife Madison. Matt has a bachelor's degree in psychology and listens to podcasts like any good millennial should. Matt enjoys writing, reading, television, music, traveling, video games, and teaching the bible.

Paul Joseph

Paul is a public school teacher with a wonderful wife and some pets. He attends Redeemer Covenant Church in Arlington, OH and is not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Paul is an awkward individual trying (and often failing) to remember the Gospel daily and live according to it. Soli Deo Gloria.

Sam Thiessen

Sam's days are filled with all things content marketing - from writing to social media management to video production. His nights are much more exciting and usually involve spending time with his wife and two daughters, plotting freelance success, and exploring biblical cosmology.

Past Contributors

Bryah Jackson

Bryah Jackson is a carpenter, working hard physically and hardly resting. He constantly strives to reconcile theology with sociology, philosophy, literary theory, anthropology, and politics, which stems from his Literature and Creative Writing undergraduate program at Colorado State University. Bryah doesn't shy away from answering or asking hard questions—more of which you can find right here at Gospel Vision.

Matt Whitney

Matt Whitney, easily the least comfortable contributor at gospel.vision, is a microbiologist by training and lay-pastor by sovereign decree. Like any American, he was indoctrinated into the half-hearted modernity and the emotionally legalistic postmodernity of all respectable modern western cultures. By the grace of Jesus he's wandering out of it. A former agnostic (ok, soft atheist), he never found much use for God, marriage, family, or fairy tales. He's now a evangelical believer, husband to a beautiful wife, father to a wonderful daughter, and believer in signs (just not dispensational ones).

Guest Contributors

Aurelius

Aurelius's name is Latin, meaning 'gilded' or 'golden'; but deep down inside, Aurelius is מוּזהָב (mūzhå̄ḇ). As he likes to say, he is Roman on the outside but Hebrew on the inside—just like Christianity. Aurelius seeks to see the deeper meanings without missing the plain meaning, and to understand the plain meaning without missing the deep. He understands that historical context provides critical definition (sometimes literally) to ancient texts.

Jason Hartman

Jason Hartman, or as he is more infamously known by his DJ name, "Jaythreat DIZZEEE", is probably the least qualified contributor here. This is due to a number of factors that will become apparent in the near future. Jason resides in Durango, CO with his smokin' wife Robin and 2 planned children and 2 unplanned children (both kinds receive equal love). Jason builds crap for money and mostly succeeds in keeping his family just north of poverty. Jason likes mountains a lot. He doesn't feel safe when he can't see mountains. Jason thinks too much. He longs for a time when Jesus will give us an answer to all riddles.

Scott Shine

Scott Shine lives in southwest Colorado with his wife, two kids, and recently-adopted mutt. He enjoys running long distances through beautiful places and paddling the family's restored Mad River canoe on the region's lakes and rivers. His wife makes fun of him for his frequent impulse shoe purchases and affinity for Theodore Roosevelt. After getting his Master's degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon, he and his wife rode a tandem bicycle 5,000 miles while raising funds to drill wells in Africa and South America. Scott hopes to do a similar expedition with the kids in the near future.

Cole Strehlow

Cole grew up in the good part of Kansas. Treehouse construction and basketball bouncing took most of his energy, but eventually he learned to read. He even wrote children's stories (saved on floppy-disks) and set a world record for the earliest rejection by a publishing company. Life went on. He earned a B.A. in Theology, moved to Fort Collins, CO, and married a beautiful girl. These days, he and his wife spend their evenings smiling at their firstborn daughter. And changing diapers. Lots of diapers.
