Art Bell passed away in his home at 72 yesterday, in Pahrump Nevada. On his radio show “Coast to Coast AM”, Art Bell was a pioneer for the acknowledgement and acceptance of stranger things in the age of modernism. He was never condescending, he always gave the benefit of the doubt, and he brought dignity to many who were marginalized for their beliefs and perspectives. A guideline he followed was “Even if I speak with 50,000 people who are insane, there’s a chance that one of them might be telling the truth.” One exceptionally rare case when he broke form was right after 9-11. Over the years having spoken with hundreds of psychics who claimed to predict the future, not one of them called him and warned him that the airplanes were going to crash into the buildings. His usual calm demeanor was eclipsed by livid anger.
My exposure to the show in the 90s inspired me to label certain subjects belonging to the “two in the morning subject matter.” Art Bell’s own label for strange subjects were the stories “beyond the edge of vision”. While many of our perspectives differed, Coast to Coast AM helped plant the early seeds for Gospel Vision.
