The British theoretical physicist who pushed the event horizon of our understanding of black holes and relativity was also known for his pop science books, namely “A Brief History of Time”. In his book he explained that the unifying theory of science would help mankind “know the mind of God.” In 2014, Hawking gave an interview to Spain’s El Mundo during which he revealed atheistic leanings. The interviewer pressed him on what he then meant by his quote “know the mind of God” from his book. Hawking responded:

“What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God. Which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”

At the age of 22 Hawking was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease (MND) and was told he’d only live a few years. God, in His grace, gave him 54 more years and our understanding of science and physics is better for it. It appears the BBC broke this story less than an hour ago (~10:30pm MST).
